Maybe I am naive, but in the UK, is religion the same issue as it is in the US? Do people routinely ask questions like "what religion are you?" "what church do you attend." Or, the more sly version "what background are you," in order to ascertain the previous question. Have to say that seeing this makes me actually want to move from the US to the UK. I hope that things are going OK for you; I see that your last post is regarding your father's health. I so greatly hope that you father will recover, and that you can continue your blog with that unburdened spirit that we Americans miss, but so very much need. I just discovered your site. Comment on #32. Is God American? by Nancy http://thevisitingbrit.com/2008/08/21/32-is-god-american/#comment-112 Nancy Tue, 16 Dec 2008 04:43:28 +0000 http://thevisitingbrit.wordpress.com/?p=133#comment-112 I think the US has gone overboard with religion, trying to put it into the White House and judging others about their religion or lack of. It should be a free choice. Nobodies business. Should not be preached from the White House. Can you imagine the president saying "God told him what to do?" I am sure we could all justify our actions by stating that. I agree that churches in communities provide a great resource, an extended family, if you will, and a common ground for many. It would be wonderful to find one without the dogma, but it does provide a lot for so many. People have different beliefs, though, and no one should be the judge about anyone else's choices. I am afraid I was never raised going to any one church, so didn't develop the ties. I am more spiritual - or metaphysical in my own heart but would encourage everyone to seek and enjoy what ever makes their heart sing. I thought the UK would be more religious than the US, and find it interesting that my thinking is incorrect. I do not think that God resides in America or any one country, but everywhere, everyplace and in every heart. I love to be organized. I almost am, with my wonderful walk-in. Who'd buy a home now without? I cannot see how one lives comfortably without one! I love to be organized. Comment on #33. Twinkies by Nancy http://thevisitingbrit.com/2008/08/23/32-twinkies/#comment-110 Nancy Tue, 16 Dec 2008 04:29:02 +0000 http://thevisitingbrit.wordpress.com/?p=142#comment-110 As a native Californian, now living in Oregon, and in my (ugh..) mid-50's, I can say that Twinkies were very popular, when I was younger, but I thought even better were the wonderfully chocolate Ding Dongs. Chocolate cake with a creamy filling and chocolate frosting. My son, who was born in '76 loved Ding Dongs in his lunches. We weren't big Twinkie fans. It is interesting to see what "rings your British chime." My sister, Kelli, moved to a town near Manchester nearly 5 years ago, married a Brit and new I have a little 1/2-1/2 nephew. I am learning a lot from her perspectives. I love the differences. Your site is now on my blog roll and I plan to visit it many times. It will be very interesting to see what Kelli writes from the American in the UK standpoint and from yours. BTW, Twinkies are full of bad stuff. Not healthy. I wouldn't eat them, but then I was thinner when I ate that kind of stuff! So maybe I should pick up a package and eat away!
